As a new member of Chatham Toastmasters, and someone who knew absolutely nothing about Toastmaster as recently as last fall I had no idea what to expect when I attended my first meeting. I received an incredibly warm welcome and very quickly learned that I was surrounded by very genuine, interesting people from a variety of walks of life and all with different reasons for being an active participant in Toastmasters. As I continued to attend meetings I immediately experienced many interesting speeches that reflected great insight, revealed personal experiences, and spoke about subjects I had no previous knowledge of such as the local history of Chatham-Kent. A Toastmasters meeting is designed to help and encourage every member to better understand, learn and improve their public speaking at their own pace. Not only do we have a lot of fun sharing weekly success stories and doing or hearing great speeches what came as a surprise to me is how much of the activity has helped me improve my listening skills and how I speak in every day conversations. The most pleasant surprise has been how we always share a lot of humour and positive energy as you see not only yourself but other members improve from meeting to meeting. There are so many positive challenges that even something as simple as getting through a meeting without saying an ‘ah’ or ‘um’ when you have spoken leaves you with a sense of accomplishment. It is this positive energy that makes the meetings absolutely invigorating. I would encourage anyone to try a few out to see for themselves. David Member as of November 2008 |
